Gunpowder Tea

Fall is almost over, and winter is around the corner.

Flu season has started, and it’s that time of year when our immune system needs some support.

What exactly does it mean to “support” the immune system??

For starters, the immune system is a complex network in your body that includes organs, tissues and physiologic processes that work together to fight off disease and infection. One of the most important parts of the immune system is lymphatic flow; and the transportation of white blood cells to and from your bone marrow. These white blood cells are one of our primary defenses in fighting infection!

Acupuncture is excellent for stimulating blood and lymphatic flow; which is why it is a great modality to jump start your immune system during the winter season.

If, unfortunately, your immune system has been compromised and you have gotten sick; it is best to stay home and rest for the first 48 hours. If you find that your body isn’t able to clear the illness ie., a lingering cough, sinus issues or general fatigue; then acupuncture, herbal medicine and supplements can help.

Here are my favorite preventative herbs that help to support the immune system:

-Astragalus Tincture

-Elderberry Syrup

-Mushrooms (tincture, cooked, or capsules; I like reishi, cordyceps, shiitake, maitake)

If you have contracted a cold then then I recommend the following herbs and tea taken in the first 24-48 hours:

-Echinacea Tincture

-Osha Tincture

RECIPE: Gun-Powder Tea (No actual gun-powder involved)

  • 3 bulbs of ginger sliced

  • 1 lemon squeeze

  • 1 tablespoon of honey

  • 1 pinch of cayenne

  • 1 pinch of cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick

  • 2 cloves of garlic crushed

Place all of the ingredients (except garlic) into a pot with 6-8 cups of water. Bring to a boil and let simmer for 1 hour, add the crushed garlic. Simmer for 10 more minutes. Strain and drink.

I hope this holiday season brings you peace, joy and good health.

Be Well.
